What is EMDR?
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is an evidence based treatment that aims at healing sever emotional pain. The pain can be caused by any traumatic event or condition related to fear. It has been used for trauma, anxiety, PTSD and more.
During disturbing events (It can be even something not life threatening such as someone yelling at you) your nervous system can get overwhelmed and not be able to process what happened, make sense of it and store it correctly.. As a result, this memory gets stored in an emotional way, not verbal and this prevents it from healing. Once this happens your amygdala, which governs the emotional part of your brain, becomes more sensitive to get activated. For that reason, on your daily life there will be situations that will trigger that memory’s emotional response as when the original disturbing event happened and your reaction would seem out of proportion for what happened at the moment. Anxiety develops as the amygdala becomes more active because the body starts anticipating a real threat while its really not.
